Wild Game Shepard’s pie

Being a good O’l Irish boy some of my favorite dishes to cook remind me of my family. One such dish is the simple yet delicious Shepard’s pie. When one cooks a meal, most times we are trying to recreate a memory, a taste from our childhood or trip we took. We try to capture the nostalgia that food holds on us.

This recipe brings me back to my Irish roots, my childhood. I remember making and eating Shepard’s Pie for our holiday dinners and cold winter nights.
Helping my mom by spreading the mash, cutting the veggies and stirring the gravy.

Now I cook this recipe with my girls. I love watching the excitement they get from mashing the potatoes, grinding our own wild game meats and of course eating what our hands created.

Hopefully you enjoy this super simple recipe with your family as much as we do.

Ingredients:

1.5 pounds Wild Game Ground four legged or winged

2 cups frozen mixed veggies

¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

3 cloves crushed garlic

1/2 cup diced onion

4 cups mashed potatoes (Make your own or instant)

3 packs brown gravy mix

3 cups water

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Salt and cracked pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375

Over medium heat, sauté garlic & onion in Worcestershire sauce, add ground meat and brown, cook fully, season to taste.

Add frozen vegetables, 3 cups of water and brown gravy packs. Bring to boil, lower to medium, Cook on medium for 3-5 minutes stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool, gravy will thicken.

In a 9 x 13 backing dish pour meat mixture, add mashed potatoes over top of mixture, smoothing out with spatula or spoon. Once smooth add cheddar cheese atop the potatoes and bake for 30 minutes until cheese is melty and gravy is bubbling towards the top.

Remove from oven and serve hot.

Serve with homemade bread or biscuits, you’ll need something to soak up all the deliciousness that is Shepard’s pie!

Enjoy!
