Hunt For A Cure: Lyme

Hunting for a cure: Lyme

Axis Hunt & Texas Fishing Trip; July 16-20th 2018

As hunters and outdoorsmen one of our biggest fears is not that of a bear attack, getting lost or any other completely rational fear we could have, for many it comes in the form of a tick. There are sprays, removal systems and special clothing we buy in hopes to keep those little bugs off and out of our skin. One of the biggest and nastiest diseases carried by ticks is Lyme. Lyme disease can stay dormant for years and the effect of Lyme can hit each host differently. I know that every time I leave the woods my hunting partners and myself do the mandatory tick check.

I never thought Lyme would hit my family, yet it did and it hit hard.

I’m holding this contest for one reason and one reason alone because Lyme has affected my family huge this past year and half. My 17 year old niece Paige started having seizures and heart problems a year and half ago. After countless doctors and ER visits the doctors were all stumped and had no answers. Finally after advice from another family member we had Paige tested for Lyme and it came back positive. A once active heathy 16 year old had suddenly been diagnosed with neurological Lyme and her body began to fight against itself. No longer was she active but now lethargic, no longer is she eating, but she is beginning to loose weight. Her muscles weaken every day and the seizures grew worse and more violent. Still we did not know much about her type of lyme, and the other diseases that are ignored by the body because its focused on Lyme. Out of Respect for what my niece is going through I will keep details to a minimum, but know it’s a brutal disease that many across this country are dealing with.

With little known on Lyme and Chronic Lyme there is no one treatment that helps everyone, its an evolving disease that impacts not only the unwilling host but everyone surrounded around them. I’ve struggled with what can I do, how can I make an impact, how can I bring awareness to this awful disease and my niece.

One of the hardest things is watching a family member waste away due to a disease that we don’t know much about. My sister is paying nearly $2500 a month in medical and doctor bills. Since the CDC recognizes Lyme but not chronic Lyme many of the bills cannot be covered by insurance and have to be paid outta pocket. There are specialist that are treating and testing different medications and treatments for Lyme, but again the cost of it is upwards of 40,000-70,000. There are natural routes that help manage the disease, helps lesson the symptoms, but not get rid of.

This brings me to why you are here, to help raise money to treat my niece and raise awareness for this awful disease.

I’ve paired with a beautiful outfitter in South Texas and many big name companies to bring you a South Texas Hunting & Fishing trip of a lifetime between the dates of July 16th-20th. Come down and join me for a hands on From Field To Plate hunting and fishing experience. Enjoy four days of hunting for a beautiful Axis deer and fishing the arroyo for such fish as giant red fish, speckled trout and flounder as we gather ingredients for some delicious meals.

Once you’ve arrived in South Texas everything is taken care of from lodging, transportation to and from airport, fishing and hunting license, gear and anything else you’ll need to hunt and fish. The only thing not covered by me is your airfare to and from Harlingen Tx. You’ll take home some beautiful meat as well as many items donated from my amazing sponsors. This trip is for you and one non hunting guest. Your guest can come along and learn, hang out and enjoy this amazing opportunity. If your guest would like to fish they can purchase a fishing License upon arrival to Texas.

  1. Mary Beth is truly a Lyme hero. I have not read her book but here are some quick answers: “First, the pain of tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of long-term tick-borne disease sufferers must be recognized. Why solve a problem that has barely been acknowledged? Answer: Money.. aside from the fact Big Pharma doesn”t have something special to sell to treat Lyme, the fact that 20 % of the population is infected then the government and insurance companies would be on the hook for vast amounts of money because disability could not be denied and there is a lot of disability among Lyme patients, and 3rd party payers could not deny treatment like they do today. “Second, health issues must be addressed, including the need for better tests and treatment trials, and an acceptance that the problem is tick-borne disease, not only Lyme disease. Answer: In the world of denialism, you don”t address secondary health issues for a problem you are negating. “Finally, an organized, coordinated effort must be made to tackle the problem of ticks in the environment and the harm they do. Answer: There are three animals that can help in the fight against Lyme. Foxes, opossums and probably the most important Guinea Hens.. they are voracious tick eaters. We need the equivalent of Johnny Appleseed for Guinea Hens. starting colonies of these birds wherever they can survive.

  2. My husband and I live with Lyme every day. Keep the warrior attitude and never, never give up! Prayers for your niece and family. We salute your efforts to bring awareness. Thank you!
